If you are not wanting to watch the video, here are the highlights.

From collection of video appearances from Will Smith

I love living. I think that’s infectious. That’s something you can’t fake.

Greatness truly exists in all of us. It is not elusive. This is what I believe and I’m willing to die for it. I know who I am, I know what I believe. You do what you need to do. What happens is we make the situation more complex than it has to be. We don’t grow up with the sense that where we were is where we were supposed to be. We grew up with the sense that where we were almost didn’t matter. We were becoming something greater.

1. There is no shortcut to success    1:36
The separation of talent and skill is one of the greatest misconceptions. Talent is natural; skill is developed after hours and hours and hours of hard work. I’ve never thought of myself as extremely talented. Where I excel is a ridiculously sickening work ethic. While the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guy’s eating, I’m working. There’s no way around it, your talent will fail you if you’re not skilled. If you don’t study, if you don’t dedicate yourself to being better every single day you’ll never be able to communicate your artistry the way you want. The only thing that is distinctively different about me is I’m not afraid to die on the treadmill. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me but if we get on the treadmill together, there’s 2 things: You’ll get off first or I’ll die.

2. Lay one brick at a time    3:04
You don’t set out to build a wall; you don’t say I’m going to build the biggest, baddest wall ever built. You say I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid and you do that every single day and soon you’ll have a wall.

3. Focus on making a difference    3:46
My grandmother always said “If you’re going to be here, then there’s a necessity to make a difference”. She always instilled the spiritual responsibility that you have to make every group you come in contact with better. I want to do good, I want the world to be better because I was here.  I want my life, my work, my family to mean something. If you’re not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.

3. Represent an Idea     4:31
I want to represent an idea. I want to represent possibilities. I want to represent the idea that you really can make what you want. One of my favorite books, The Alchemist, Paul Coelho, I believe I can create what I want to create.

4. You have to believe   5:01
The first step, before anyone else believes it, you have to believe it. There’s no reason to have a Plan B  because it distracts from Plan A. I think there’s a certain delusional quality that all successful people have to have. You have to believe that what has happened for the past 50 billion years, you have to believe something different can happen. Confucius says “He who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right”.

5. Nothing is unrealistic  5:48
Being realistic is the most traveled road to mediocrity. What is the point of being realistic? All it does is put up a barrier. The second I decide, it’s done, it’s already done. I just gotta wait for y’all to see. It’s unrealistic to flip a switch and expect a light to go on. Fortunately, Edison didn’t believe that. It’s unrealistic to think you can bend a piece of metal and fly over an ocean in it. Fortunately, the Wright Brothers didn’t believe that. It seems like such a ridiculous idea to me to embrace the idea that it’s not going to happen. As soon as you say it, now you just made it real.

6. Our thoughts are physical 6:46
Our thoughts, our ideas, our dreams are physical in the universe. If we dream something, if we picture it, we commit ourselves to it. Every physical thrust towards realization that we can put into the universe, then the universe is not going to push us around, the world, the people, the situation is not going to push us around, then we can demand that the universe become what we want it to be.  I study the patterns of the universe, there is a redemptive power that making a choice has. Rather than the feeling that you are an effect to all the things that are happening, make a choice, just decide who you’re gonna be, how you’re gonna be, what you’re gonna be and how you’re gonna do it. Decide and the universe is gonna get outta your way; it’s water, it wants to move and go around stuff. There’s a flow of the universe that I’ve grown to know just how to go with it.

7. You really gotta focus  8:09
I realize to have the level of success that I want to have is difficult. It takes such a desperate obsessive focus. You really have to focus with all your fiber, all of your heart, all of your creativity.

8. Attack your fears  8:30
I’m motivated by fear- a fear of fear- I hate being scared to do something. I think something I developed in my early days was I started attacking things I was scared of.

9. Be willing to die for the truth  9:04
You can’t be scared to die for the truth. The truth is the only thing that is ever going to be constant.

10. Protect your dream  9:16
Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do something. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People who can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you you can’t. You want something, go get it, period.
