Rhonda Shaw is a math teacher and resides in Coppell.

Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?
I gained 60 lbs in the past 3 years. I was in a very stressful and demanding teaching position getting little sleep, eating out a lot, eating anything and everything (stress eater), drinking diet sodas and iced tea constantly, no regular exercise, foot issues, knee pain, uncomfortable to even tie my shoes.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?
I lost my job in December of 2018 and this allowed me to do a great deal of reflecting on my priorities and general “out of wackness” of my life. I was attracted to the accountability aspect of the program and have always enjoyed exercise when I establish a routine and carve out time to do it. It hit me that at 55 yrs old, I better take some action, or I would risk future immobility and general poor health.

Q: What was your first impression from the Get You In Shape program?
Honestly, it was just what I needed:
Friendly people
Good trainers
Food ideas/recipes
Periodic measuring and fitness testing to see progress

Q: What have been some of the tools you have used that have benefited you?
My Fitness Pal is honestly my best friend. I don’t even think about not entering my food and exercise and water intake now. I love seeing the nutritional info on the food I am eating, and the macros help me make choices throughout the day for my next small meal. I also like the health tips and articles at your fingertips on the app. It’s amazingly user friendly and I have a friend in Houston on a “get healthy” journey as well and so we use the app to hold each other accountable and to encourage each other.

The recipe book GYIS shared with us is awesome. I have not made one recipe that I did not enjoy.

Q: How is the Get You In Shape program different from other programs you have tried before?
My Coach app: I enjoyed learning from Brad in these daily communications and of course the encouragement was awesome!

It is teaching me that food is my fuel; not just something to alter to drop weight. The half your body weight of water recommended daily has also been as strong influence on my transition from tired and listless to energetic and ready to go. I thought water was mandated in diet programs to generally fill you up so you were not so hungry. Now, I realize it has many health benefits.

GYIS taught me to eat clean. Even losing 40 lbs 3 times in the past, I ate fewer calories and exercised, but did not choose to eat real food and leave processed food behind like I do now.

Q: What results and benefits have you experienced in the Get You In Shape Program?
I lost 17 lbs my first month, and two weeks into my second month, I have lost another 7lbs. I have “followed the darn instructions.” More importantly, I am getting up at the same time each morning and going to bed at the same time each night and reaping the benefits of 7 hours per night of sleep with no more waking up multiple times during the night. My productivity is better because I am managing stress better. The exercise rigor really gets my endorphins going and I feel more positive and hopeful about life in general.

Q: What would you say to anyone looking at this program?
It’s a slam dunk! Do it! I am investing in my future everyday with my food intake, my water intake, my health education, and my exercise routine. Join me and invest in yourself! You are so worth it!
