Racing for Awareness: One Man’s Journey Through Cancer and the Call to Get Screened

Paul Weigel is no stranger to endurance challenges. A seasoned marathon runner and triathlete, he thrived on pushing his body to the limit. But at 43, he faced the toughest race of his life—one that had nothing to do with finish lines or medals.

Diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer 11 years ago, Paul refused to let the disease define him. Instead, he fought back with the same determination that carried him through countless competitions.

Even during treatment, Paul continued running, swimming, and biking—often with his chemo drugs in a backpack. His motivation wasn’t just personal; it was about creating a legacy for his newborn daughter.

“I wanted my daughter to have a lasting memory of me finishing an Ironman, knowing her dad was not a quitter,” Paul said.

Today, Paul is cancer-free and has chronicled his journey in his book, Iron Dad, a tribute to perseverance, hope, and the power of never giving up.

Why Colorectal Cancer Awareness Matters

Paul’s story is one of triumph, but for many, the battle is just beginning. Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the United States. Yet, what makes this disease particularly tragic is that it is also one of the most preventable with early screening.

With colorectal cancer rates rising among younger adults, the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and other health organizations are urging individuals to take action.

Who Should Get Screened?

The latest guidelines now recommend starting screening at age 45 for individuals at average risk. However, those with a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors should talk to their doctors about earlier screening options.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to schedule a screening or encourage loved ones to do the same.

Why Early Detection Saves Lives

Getting screened for colorectal cancer isn’t just about peace of mind—it’s a lifesaving decision. Here’s why:

It can detect early warning signs. Precancerous polyps can be identified and removed before they develop into cancer.
It catches cancer early. When colorectal cancer is found early, treatment is significantly more effective.
It saves lives. Over 150,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, and more than a third will not survive.

Higher Risks in Certain Populations

Some groups face a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. African Americans, for example, are more likely to be diagnosed and often at more advanced stages. This makes early detection even more critical for those in higher-risk categories.

Take Action: Schedule Your Screening Today

Paul’s story is a reminder that fighting cancer isn’t just about survival—it’s about living with purpose. By taking control of your health through early screening, you can significantly reduce your risk and potentially save your own life.

Don’t wait. Talk to your healthcare provider about getting screened today. And if you know someone 45 or older who hasn’t scheduled their screening, encourage them to take that first step toward prevention.
