“Where Are They Now” Spotlight – January 2018 – Bill & Mary Brown

Mary Brown is a pediatrician and started with GYIS in October 2008. Bill Brown is a project manager (EE) and started in December 2009. They reside in Coppell.

Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?
Mary: Before joining GYIS I got moderately consistent exercise but not really an organized or well-planned regimen. Just before joining I was walking 2-3 miles with a friend and our dogs 5 days a week. We joined GYIS together to try something different “just for a month” to see what it was like.
Bill: Before joining I had taken a 28 year break from vigorous exercise. My exercise consisted of walking whenever possible.

Q: What results and benefits did you initially experience with the Get You In Shape Program?
Mary: Initial results after joining the program were mainly development of more muscle and learning to do better cardio. I had more energy as a result of the exercise program.
Bill: I lost 5 lbs. initially, learned how to do a sit-up (needing weights on my feet in order to do it) as well as all the other exercises.

Q: What results and benefits you accomplished since that first year?
Mary: I’ve maintained my weight pretty well over the last 8-9 years. We have done 6 or 7 sprint triathlons which wouldn’t have happened without the encouragement of the GYIS trainers. I participate in 5k runs. The challenges that we have participated in through GYIS have helped with nutrition. Cardio club has been really a benefit for me since the variety of things we do, I would not do on my own.
Bill: I started running again, including going to cardio club since it began and have done numerous runs from 5k, 15k, turkey trot, 8 mile and several half marathons. I picked up biking with various friends that I met through GYIS and have done a sprint triathlon once a year.

Q: How is the Get You In Shape program different from other programs you have tried before?
Mary: I hadn’t been in any previous programs but would do circuits at the YMCA which was pretty repetitive. GYIS has a lot of variation in the workouts, excellent trainers and a great atmosphere. We all feel accountable to each other to show up and work out together. Everyone is encouraged to work at their own level. There is a definite feeling of community here.
Bill: This is the first program I ever tried but I saw how much Mary was enjoying it so I signed up. I never thought I could work out at 5:30 am either. I really enjoy the people and the trainers.

Q: What do you feel have been some of the keys that have helped you throughout the journey?
Mary: The consistent weekly exercise is the biggest key for me. Using myfitnesspal has helped (I do have some screenshots with 40:30:30 right on the nose). Getting to know so many people who are also trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle has also been a big motivator for me.
Bill: Consistently working out with the help of the excellent, committed trainers has been the key to my success using this program.
