Healthy Recipe of the Month – Local Restaurants and what to choose

This month we wanted to give you some local places and healthy choices you can make. This is more geared for vegetarians

Arby’s  – baked potato and a garden salad or side salad with Italian dressing.

Restaurant List

Backyard Burger (we have a few around here) – has a garden veggie sandwich.

Boston Market – has several vegan and vegetarian options, including the steamed vegetables, zucchini marinara, tossed salad (without the croutons and dressing), apple cobbler, chunky cinnamon applesauce, cranberry walnut relish, and fruit salad.  Good place to take the kids, too.

Burger King – has the BK Veggie, which is a flame-broiled vegetarian burger (I’ve never had this before, but understand that it DOES contain dairy products)

Chili’s – has a guiltless grill with some good options.  Plus, I know they have veggie quesadillas—just replace the cheese and sour cream with extra vegetables—or get the Cadillac Fajitas without the meat.

Chipotle – has a vegetarian fajita burrito, but order it with black beans instead of the  pinto beans (they cook them with bacon, I believe).

Pizza Hut – uses a vegan tomato sauce.  You can order pizza without cheese, and with veggies.

CiCi’s – if you take the kids to the buffet, then you’ll have access to the pasta and salad buffet, too.  The spinach pizza is actually pretty decent, too.

Denny’s – has some vegetarian/vegan options such as:  oatmeal, English muffins, bagels, grits, applesauce, fresh fruit, vegetable plates, seasoned potato fries, baked potatoes with several vegetable toppings, garden salads with light Italian or oil-and-vinegar dressing, and sandwiches that can be made with several vegetable options. It also serves a vegetarian burger.

Houston’s Steakhouse – expensive steakhouse, but they actually offer a veggie plate and the Vegetarian Burger. Just be sure to order the burger on vegan bread.

 J. Macklin’s Grill – (in Coppell) has good salad options and a kids menu.

Jason’s Deli – has the Garden Po’ Boy, the Portobello Wrapini, and the Spinach Veggie Wrap.

La Hacienda Ranch – the veggie fajitas are AWESOME!  Tableside guacamole (just avocado, garlic powder and salt) is great, too.

Macaroni Grill – has several vegan options, including all the pastas with garlic and oil and its Capellini Pomodoro.  Also, you can order either the Tomato Bruschetta or the Penne Arrabbiata without cheese.

Mi Cocina – has spinach enchiladas, tortilla soup, enchildas “modern” (with veggies) and fresh guacomole.

Panera Bread – has bagels with roasted garlic hummus

P.F. Chang’s – has a whole vegetarian menu.  I’m not a big fan of tofu, but they have a lot of vegetarian/vegan choices that use tofu.

Quiznos Subs – has a veggie sub that’s filled with guacamole, black olives, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and mushrooms—just be sure to order it without the cheese and ask for the balsamic vinaigrette instead of the red wine vinaigrette. You can also get a side garden salad.

Rainforest Café – (at Grapevine Mills Mall—Kids LOVE IT!!!) has the Natural Burger–get it without the Safari Sauce and the Morningstar Garden Grill.

Ruby Tuesday – has a veggie burger, veggie burger wrap and a salad bar.

Spiral Diner – (we have one in Dallas/Oak Cliff area and one in Ft. Worth) All-vegetarian restaurant with a fun kids menu, too.  Our 6-yr old loves this place.

Subway – has the Veggie Delite

Sweet Tomatoes – (we have one at 635/MacArthur area) has TONS of custom salads, sandwiches, and soups, including a sweet potato bar, and LOTS of options for kids including make your own chocolate milk and brownie.

Taco Bell – has the 7-Layer Burrito that you can get without cheese and sour cream.  Bean burrito with cheese works, too.  You can order any kind of taco or nachos if you hold the meat and cheese.

Wendy’s – has a plain baked potato, the Deluxe Garden Salad with red Italian dressing and no cheese and a veggie sandwich.

A special Thanks to Scott, one of our great personal trainers and a vegetarian guru for putting this list together.
