The Fitness Boot Camp workouts have been popular for years. A 2008 study done by a trade organization for gyms called the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association found that 955 of its 3,300 clubs offer boot-camp style fitness because of gym-goer demand.
But while it’s still possible to find camps that would do any drill sergeant proud, some camps are moving away from the bullhorn-barking style of instruction often associated with demeaning participants and pushing them until they vomit.
Now, instead of yelling “drop and give me 20” in the face of those who don’t sweat enough, some instructors inspire campers with rousing cries of “hooyah” and high-fives.
To bring out this softer side of fitness, some local boot camps now include DJs spinning music, morale-boosting conversations, team-building competitions and constant encouragement through participants cheering, clapping and counting for fellow campers.
The reason for the change: People want the tough, back-to-basics style of the camps without screaming and intimidation.
