Laura Hazlewood is an Operations Director for AT&T and lives in Coppell. She started her journey with GYIS in March of 2015.
Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?
I was frustrated that my clothes didn’t fit, I was not comfortable with my body, I felt like I was not being the physical role model that my kids deserved. Like everyone with a busy work and family schedule, I felt like I didn’t have any time to devote to getting or keeping in shape and was really desperate for that inspiration to make the lifestyle change and commitment to myself. My meals tended to be whatever was quick and on the run, I made sure my kids had healthy options and I would “grab whatever was left”. I was often tired and my overall energy level was really low. I think for me, it was the lack of confidence that really sparked my initial call to Brad asking for his help.
Q: What results and benefits did you initially experience with the Get You In Shape Program?
The first two months were physically and mentally really tough but also invigorating. I lost 10 pounds the first month and then 11 pounds the second month which was a huge motivator. My goal was to lose 30 pounds by Christmas (9 months into the program) and I lost 44!! When I started GYIS, I wore a size 14 pants/skirts and an XL in pretty much everything. I clearly remember trying on shorts in July of 2015 (about 4 months into my GYIS program) and a size10 was too big. My daughter went back out into the store and came back with a size 8, and they FIT!! I couldn’t believe it . . . I literally cried with excitement and pride. Since then, I am consistently a size 8 and a medium!! An absolutely amazing feeling that I will never let slip away. With food being a “go to” for me over the years, I constantly remind myself that nothing tastes as good as being healthy and thinner feels.
Q: What results and benefits you accomplished since that first year?
Since attaining my weight loss goal in December 2015, I have completed a half marathon, as well as several 5k’s, I’ve improved my mile time by 4 minutes. I am stronger (use much heavier weights, slam balls and kettle bells) and my endurance is incredible compared to what it was. I am totally committed to 5:30am boot camp 3 days per week and I have become so much stronger physically and mentally. I sleep better, eat MUCH better, and I have a ton of confidence both in my family life and in my professional life. I am proud to have been able to maintain my size 8/medium body and can totally keep up with my kids through all of their activities. There are many occasions that they say “Mom, aren’t you tired yet?”
Q: What do you feel have been some of the keys that have helped you throughout the journey?
Without a doubt, I couldn’t have done this without the training team at GYIS and the amazing friends that I have been blessed with at boot camp. Everyone is inspiring, motivating, helpful and drives you to go beyond what you thought you could do. I am grateful for the results so far but am probably even more grateful for the journey. It is neither easy nor fun to get up at 4:30am three days a week but IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT!! Giving it 100% that early in the day really keeps you on track for the remainder of the day-eating right, getting your steps in, making sure you are doing off day cardio as well. It all adds up and is all required for success. You get out what you put in. If you are committed and dedicated, the sky is the limit!!
Q: What would you say to anyone looking to join the Get You In Shape program?
If you want support and inspiration, if you want to meet people and make new friends-you have to try GYIS. You need to be dedicated, motivated, have goals and focus on hitting those goals, this is the team that can get you there. I am 2 ½ years into a journey that will last forever. There is no going back. I can’t imagine not being a part of this wonderful community. I am a lifer 🙂
