Get You In Shape Spotlight Rookie of the Month – November 2014

The Get You In Shape team hand selects clients each month that we feel have transformed their health and fitness. This Get You In Shape Spotlight Rookie for November joined Get You In Shape in August 2014. Jeff Mann, a Boston native, moved to Coppell in April of this year to join the International Association of Venue Managers as their COO. Jeff has spent the last 16 years running sports arenas for NBA/NHL teams.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?  Like most people I just wasn’t happy with how I was feeling and my overall condition. I have a very active 12-year old son and I can’t imagine not being able to play games with him.

Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?  I think I have a very typical story. I was a Division I collegiate baseball athlete and I was always pretty active. Even after college, I continued to play sports and was in decent shape. As the years moved on, I was less and less active and it started to take a toll on me. I didn’t feel good physically and I didn’t like the way I looked.

JMannQ: What was your first impression from the Get You In Shape program? Everyone was very welcoming. I have never tried a class or setting like this before so I was nervous, but people went out of their way to say hello and make me feel welcome. The first workout was rough. I was in bad shape and realized I had a long way to go. But I felt as though I had accomplished something.

Q: What have been some of the tools you have used that have benefited you ?Tracking my diet in a journal and really planning my meals in advance has helped a lot. I am cooking more now than I have in years. I enjoy cooking at home, but when you are a single guy working long hours, it’s easy to just grab something quick. By planning my meals days in advance, I have what I need on hand and look forward to cooking.

Q: How is the Get You In Shape program different from other programs you have tried before? All I have really done is go to the gym and I was doing the same old routine for years. I was bored, I was not motivated at all, and the results (or lack of results) showed that. At GYIS, I enjoy the group setting. I don’t feel that I can quit or cut a workout short as I have done at the gym. I enjoy the group or team environment and it helps keep me motivated.

Q: What results and benefits have you experienced in the Get You In Shape Program? In the first 10 days, I lost 6.5 lbs and 7+ inches. I was then on the road for nearly two weeks with work and slid backward, but I am once again moving in the right direction. A big result that surprised me was my mile run time. I am NOT a runner. I have knee issues and it’s just not something I do or enjoy. When I was first told I would be timed, I was hoping to do it in under 14 mins. After just a week of the GYIS program, I did it in under 11 minutes. Then just this morning (10/8/14), I was really surprised to see that I did it in under 10 minutes! So in just about a month’s time I am well ahead of where I thought I was based on my previous work on the treadmill.

I am not morning person. Most of my career has been long days and late nights. Surprisingly, I actually enjoy the 6:30am class and in the past where I would have stayed up very late (at least midnight, if not later), I now find myself tired and wanting to go to bed around 10-10:30 and getting a better night’s sleep.

Q: What would you say to anyone looking at this program? I waited too long to try something new like this. If you want to feel better about your health, your appearance, and overall energy level , definitely give it a shot.
