Coppell Trainer 10 Lessons Learned in 10 Years Part 8

October of 2017 will mark Get You In Shape’s 10th Year Anniversary of starting the Get You In Shape fitness program in Coppell.

Although Get You In Shape was “born” in 2006 
 (see previous blog post here), we are celebrating 10 Years of the Coppell Fitness program.

I often get asked each year when we celebrate..“What are lessons learned from 10 years of being in business?”

I enjoy reading answers like this myself so I thought this may benefit others. So I have added ​10 Lessons I've  learned In 10 Years ​to hopefully will give you insight, nuggets and​ wisdom.

Lesson #8 - Use Your Gifts To Give Back – 

The first of our core values is COMMUNITY. Life is much more enjoyable when you’re on a journey with others. The community is what it’s all about.

We learned early on that we could use our gifts to bring people together for fitness related events and give back to a local charity. 

Cynthia, my wife, was a special education teacher at Coppell Middle School East in those early years. She was also volunteered as a Coppell Special Olympics basketball coach. We found out that Coppell Special Olympics hardly had any practice balls, no uniforms and practice jerseys. 

In 2010 we decided to host a small 5k to help raise money so that the athletes for the Coppell Special Olympics had some basic needs met like basketballs and jerseys. Little did we know that one thought to use our God-given gifts to help a worthy cause has lead to over $72,000 raised for the Coppell Special Olympics. 

When you have a community of like-minded people, it’s easy to “round up the troops” and put fun events on to help give back. It has been very humbling to know that the Get You In Shape community has been able to give back more than $120,000 in all of our Charity events over the last 9 years. The Coppell 5k for the Coppell Special Olympic teams, Pushups for Charity Events for our veterans, Thanksgiving Turkey Busting workouts (Can Good drive for CCA) and Boot Camp 4 Backpacks for school supplies and many other local charity events.
