Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?
For the most part, I was very sedentary both at home and at the office. I manage a staff of architects and engineers, write technical reports and spend the majority of my day at the computer. Most evenings we enjoyed watching TV or plodding on our smartphones and tablets. A couple nights each week were involved with some outside groups that at least got me out of the house. Weekends we liked to Kayak or golf occasionally or take short trips. Physical activity was pretty limited. As we aged, the health challenges crept in, which included a left hip replacement back in 2013.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?
My previous attempts at fitness have included gym memberships, cycling and intermittent walking with limited to no success, and some weight loss success with Medifast. Because of my age and lifestyle choices, Type II Diabetes has required constant attention. I had a brief period when I lost 40 some pounds with reducing or eliminating my BP and Type II meds, so I know what I need to do. I just needed help DOING it. This was the appeal of GYIS, in that the personal training in a group setting motivated me to set goals, get active, and make better choices. The nutrition, supplements, Apps and other fitness tools confirmed what I already knew and had used previously and complemented GYIS well.

Q: What was your first impression from the Get You In Shape program?
I was excited to be actually doing something again but was unsure of the outdoor/boot camp nature of the program. I quickly came to appreciate the style, as the workouts were thoughtfully planned, achievable at various levels of effort and fitness, and included dedicated rock-star instructors. I joined in early October, so it took some getting-used-to to consciously CHOOSE to get out of bed at 0 dark :30, and exercise outside in the gusty rain at 40F or worse. I am VERY motivated to see what this is like under normal Texas summer conditions.

Q: What have been some of the tools you have used that have benefited you?
My Fitness Pal and My Coach have been very important to keeping me on track and give much-needed feedback on what I’m doing/not doing. My Fitness Pal, when I enter food regularly, really opens my eyes to what nutrition I was or wasn’t receiving. Lately I received a MorePro Fitness Tracker that continuously checks BP, Heart Rate, Steps and Sleep. It’s a huge help in keeping abreast of all my health metrics.

Q: How is the Get You In Shape program different from other programs you have tried before?
The other programs I used relied on me to educate myself and set up my own exercises, reps, weights, schedule and motivation to be active. GYIS does that for me and more, including nutrition/eating guides, supplements and keeps the exercises varied and useful. I like the HIRT style and using body weight for most exercises. With my novice fitness experience and success, it is such a relief and much easier to have the workouts planned for me and prescribed, timed and monitored/motivated to get it done. Being outside, rain or shine makes it unique, too. But Boot Camps seem to be cropping up more and more lately. Must be the successful formula!

Q: What results and benefits have you experienced in the Get You In Shape Program?
While my primary goal is to lose weight over the long term (50 lbs. in a year), I KNOW for sure that successful weight loss will result in health improvement and elimination of all or most of my medications, another big goal. Over the first 3 weeks I lost 6 pounds, and then had a business trip for which I planned poorly and gained a bit back. Weight loss in the last quarter of 2018 has remained a zero result, oscillating between loss and gain. That said, there has been a marked improvement in my core, glucose control and blood pressure. I have a continuous glucose monitor on my arm and have the fitness tracker continuously checking BP and HR, so I am tracking most of the primary indicators of most of my health problems. Within the first 3 weeks of starting GYIS, I noticed my blood glucose levels were remaining lower than normal, and recovering quicker after eating meals. Since the levels had become routinely lower than my previous average, I slowly reduced insulin doses and have effectively eliminated that from my list of meds. I still need occasional insulin doses and take other diabetes meds, but this was a huge improvement for me. I also have noticed a more consistently lower blood pressure, previously averaging around 138/90 at 86 to 88 RHR, to lately at 125/82 at 71 to 75 RHR. I like where that is trending and am motivated even more to keep it up and be more disciplined. Hopefully upcoming Dr. visits will start a trend reducing meds as a result (one of my so that’s!).

Q: What would you say to anyone looking at this program?
I would tell them GYIS is a well planned and executed fitness program, with enough flexibility and challenge to include all body shapes, sizes and commitments. Where the outdoor, boot camp, personal training in a group environment style may be different and unusual, it is less intimidating than weights/cardio at a gym with DIY training (high failure for me), and provides a planned, closely trained, motivated and quality program of all-around fitness and nutrition. Plus, the GYIS trainers and owners are highly qualified, and dedicated to your health and well-being.
