Q: What was your life like before joining the Get You In Shape Program?
Prior to GYIS my physical activity involved jogging and martial arts practices. Both activities were good and healthy but not well rounded and not really focused on broader fitness and health. My eating habits were pretty mediocre.

Q: What results and benefits did you initially experience with the Get You In Shape Program?
Since I was reasonably healthy when I started GYIS there was no real dramatic initial difference.

Q: What results and benefits you accomplished since that first year?
Over time, with consistent attendance, the changes became noticeable. Over the last 7 years about 25 lbs gradually came off and the waist size on my Levis went from 33 to 30. My general strength and all around fitness have improved but one of the most noticeable things is that when starting GYIS I was taking 12 – 15 ibuprofens a week for back pain. Now I take less than 10 per year. That has been a really big change for me and to a great extent it has to be due to the back/core exercises we regularly do during the workouts. A couple years ago I completed a half marathon and that would have been a serious problem without GYIS. The exercise regimen has helped motivate me to improve my diet, still not the best but a definite improvement.

Q: How is the Get You In Shape program different from other programs you have tried before?
The program is great for a number of reasons. Number one is the quality of the trainers. They are encouraging, helpful, and put together well thought through training sessions month after month. Also, the sense of community with other GYIS folks. So many supportive and encouraging people are part of the group, a real serious benefit. The exercises are broad and well-rounded and make participants do things they would probably not do on their own. (seriously, who would do superman’s on their own). The flexibility of times offered is great. My first 3 years were at 05:30 and then my business moved to home office. As a result the noon class is great for me because it breaks up my work day. However, if there’s a conflict at noon like a lunch scheduled or a major soccer tournament being played in Europe then there are several other times available to workout.

Q: What do you feel have been some of the keys that have helped you throughout the journey?
For me consistency is a big factor and GYIS makes it easy to maintain that consistency. First ya gotta show up. After many years of tracking exercise days per year it’s motivational to try and get in more exercise days each year, a bit of a goal to go toward. I’ve used a spreadsheet and if I see my exercise days logged by a certain date are less than the previous year it’s good motivation to pick up the slack.
